Meaning, Pillars of 'Umrah
The meaning of ‘Umrah :
Linguistically : ‘Umrah (عمرة) is derived from I’timaar (اعتمار) which means a visit.
Legally/Shar'ie (Islamic Law) : it means paying a visit to Ka’bah, performing Tawaaf (circumambulation) around it, Sa‘ie between Safaa and Marwah 7 times and lastly cut/shave one’s hair.
The Rites of ‘Umrah :
Intention (niyyah) – Ihram & Miqat Tawaf 7 rounds - round the Ka‘bah Sa‘ie between Safa & Marwah 7 x Cut or Shave one’s hair = complete Tawaf Wada‘ – when leaving Makkah – a disputed ritual for ‘Umrah among scholars.
The Pillars (Rukun) of ‘Umrah :
Rukun = Obligatory Items. If missed, or
not done = The ‘Umrah is invalid.
1. Intention (niyyah)
2. Tawaf 7 rounds - round the Ka‘bah
3. Sa‘ie between Safa & Marwah 7 x
4. Shave or haircut
5. All the above done in sequence/order.
(According to some Madhdhabs, among others ash-Shafi'ie)
The Compulsory/Waajib Items of ‘Umrah :
Waajib = Compulsory Items.
If missed or not done = ‘Umrah is valid, but must compensate it (Kaffaarah – Damm (goat), Fidyah etc.
1. Ihraam and Miqaat - at it’s appointed place
2. Abstaining from everything prohibited while in the state of Ihraam –
3. Tawaf wada‘ – when leaving Makkah – a disputed matter.
(According to some Madhdhabs, among others ash-Shafi'ie)
The Recommended / Supererogatory / Sunnat Items of ‘Umrah :
If missed or not done = ‘Umrah is valid, and no penalty.
1. Ritual Bathing before Ihraam
2. Kissing/Touching the Hajar Aswad
3. 2 Raka‘ahs after Tawaf (compulsory – the more righteous opinion against the more popular) (see : Bughyat al-Mutathowi' by ash-Shaykh 'Omar Bazmool due to the many narrations that these 2 raka'ahs had never been neglected by the Prophet SAW and Companions)
4. Drinking Zam-zam water
5. Saying all the Dzikir & Du‘a/Talbiyah.
